The Estrel Berlin, the largest hotel in Germany, needed a new hotel locking system because the existing system had become outdated and no longer met the requirements of the hotel. The responsible persons chose a system from SALTO that offers better overview and a structure adapted to the size and thus ideally supports the processes of the hotel.
The Estrel Berlin is one of the best conference and congress hotels in the world: opened in 1994, it combines multifunctional conference rooms, a four-star plus hotel with 1,125 rooms and suites, four restaurants, three bars, international show events and the very latest technology under one roof and employs over 500 staff.

Currently, all 1,125 guest rooms and suites in the Estrel Berlin, over 300 doors in the Congress Center and Back-of-House as well as around 500 employee lockers are equipped with the SALTO solution. The XS4 One electronic long plate escutcheon is used throughout the guest area, at the hotel room doors with electronic privacy function. The XS4 Original escutcheon is installed in the back-of-house, partly in the wide version on fire doors and with an outdoor kit on exterior doors and as a double reader on the doors to the breakfast room. In addition, there are XS4 glass door locks for conference rooms. 24 SALTO wall readers are used to secure various access points, including staff entrances, gates and car park entrances. In addition, around 500 XS4 Locker electronic locker locks for the employee lockers are installed in the changing rooms. The hotel uses two electronic SALTO Geo padlocks to secure the material store.
Technologically, the access control solution is based on the SALTO Virtual Network (SVN) with patented read-write functionality and encrypted data transmission. The identification technology used is Mifare DESFire EV1 for employee ID cards and Mifare Ultralight C for guest media.
The decisive factors for chosing SALTO were its rich functionality, flexibility and scalability. The security requirements included clear and flexible control of access rights. In addition, card handling was to be simplified, i.e. the design, coding, issueing and return of key cards. The reliability of the hardware and software was crucial because it has a significant effect on guest experience. In addition, a connection to the PMS (Property Management System) Opera from Oracle used in the hotel had to exist. And the vendor had to have experience in the hotel sector and its specific requirements - also in terms of size.
The system was planned and installed by SALTO Premium Partner Schlüsseldienst Th. Schulz GmbH from Berlin. The installation was carried out during operation from June to August 2018. Depending on the occupancy, a room was always re-equipped so that no impairments occurred. The old locking system replaced the Estrel in parallel.
